The choice of glass in a PV module has become a key consideration in efforts to improve durability in the face of extreme weather conditions.
A layer of tempered glass shields the solar cells, protecting them from the elements. These panels are lighter, more affordable, and suitable for most residential rooftops. However, like any superhero, they have weaknesses. The plastic backsheet (think of it as their kryptonite) can degrade over time, potentially affecting performance.
The only feasible way for tempered glass to be widely used in solar modules is its application in single-glass modules. The prevailing benchmark for hail resistance, which stipulates that solar modules must be capable of withstanding impacts from hailstones up to 35mm in diameter, may fall short in areas frequently subjected to larger hailstones.
Mono-glass panels cost 10–20% less upfront. They are lighter, faster to install, and easier to maintain. Glass-glass panels cost more. Bifacial models and extra glass add to production, shipping, and labor costs. Still, for big, sunny, reflective sites, glass-glass can recover the higher cost with extra generation.
