Single-phase string inverters perform DC to AC power conversion on series-connected PV panels. The inverter optimizes the solar energy yield through maximum power point tracking (MPPT). While a secondary side provides AC compatibility with the local grid, grid synchronization, reactive power compensation, and anti-islanding functions.
String inverters consist of power switches such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). This kind of power device has issues such as tail current and diode reverse recovery, which lead to high switching losses. Furthermore, these phenomena are affected by temperature, leading to higher power losses, especially for static-cooled solutions.
This reference design is intended to show an implementation of a two-channel single-phase string inverter with fully bidirectional power flow to combine PV input functionality with BESS supporting a wide range of battery voltages. This system consists of two boards that are split by different functionality.
